Acting Head of Department: Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, Associate Professor Volodymyr Dmytrovych Martyn
On September 1, 2025, the Department of Theory and Methods of Physical Culture and Sports was established within the Faculty of Social Well-Being and Human Health, headed by a distinguished specialist in the field of physical culture and sports, Honored Coach of Ukraine, Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, Associate Professor Bohdan Stepanovych Semeniv.
The Department defines its primary mission as the training of highly qualified professionals in the field of physical culture and sports, capable of effectively contributing to public health promotion, popularizing a healthy lifestyle, and fostering the development of sports at different levels.
To achieve this mission, the Department sets forth a range of educational, research, social, and organizational objectives. Specifically, in the educational sphere, the main goal is to ensure high-quality theoretical and practical training of students within the relevant educational programs. In the research domain, the focus lies on conducting scientific investigations in the areas of physical culture and sports. In social life, the Department emphasizes developing students’ skills and knowledge to work with diverse population groups (children, school pupils, students, adults, and the elderly).
To implement these objectives, the Department has identified the following key tasks:
- Educational: developing and updating curricula, course syllabi, and methodological resources; conducting lectures, seminars, practical classes, and laboratory sessions; supervising student research and qualification projects; organizing and overseeing pedagogical, research, and industrial internships.
- Research: carrying out scientific studies within the Department’s research scope; publishing scholarly articles and monographs; participating in conferences, seminars, and symposia; engaging students in research activities.
- Methodological: improving teaching methods in the Department’s disciplines; developing textbooks and teaching manuals; introducing innovative technologies into the educational process.

Head of Department: Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, Professor Olesia Yevhenivna Smolinska
Since 2015, the Department has been headed by Professor Olesia Yevhenivna Smolinska, Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences. Her scholarly and methodological output includes over 170 publications. Among her notable achievements is third place in the All-Ukrainian Contest “Best Lecturer of the Ukrainian Language in Higher Education Institutions of Ukraine” (2010). She defended her Candidate of Sciences (PhD) dissertation in 1999 on the topic “Linguodidactic Foundations of National-Language Education of the Individual through Ukrainian Folklore”, and her doctoral dissertation in 2015 on “Theoretical and Methodological Foundations of Organizing the Cultural and Educational Space of Pedagogical Universities in Ukraine.” Since 2008 she served as Associate Professor of the Department of Ukrainian Language, and since 2018 as Professor of the Department of Philosophy and Pedagogy.
The academic staff of the Department provide instruction in philosophy, sociology, political science, conflict studies, cultural studies, logic, and pedagogically oriented disciplines, including specialized professional courses. In 2017, the Department gained the status of a graduating (degree-awarding) department. That same year, it launched its first student intake, and in 2018 and 2023 successfully passed accreditation of the Master’s-level educational program “Educational and Pedagogical Sciences.” As of 2025, seven cohorts have graduated in both full-time and part-time modes of study. Our alumni are employed as lecturers at universities, technical colleges, and other educational institutions, and are also engaged in non-formal education and pedagogical support for lifelong learning.
In 2024, the Department launched its first intake into the Bachelor’s-level educational program “Adult Education, Coaching, Tutoring, and Community Organization.”
The Department also places particular emphasis on the quality of doctoral (PhD) training, viewing it as its mission to cultivate ways of thinking and scholarly practices that ensure both successful academic careers and the advancement of Ukrainian education and science.

Acting Head of Department: Candidate of Biological Sciences Mariia Mykhailivna Yaremchuk
The Department of Rehabilitation and Human Health was established in 2019 on the basis of the license of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine granting the right to provide training in specialty 227 “Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy.” Its creation was made possible through the significant efforts of Faculty Dean Ruslan Andriiovych Pelen.
Currently, the Department offers higher education in the field of “Health Care” under specialty 227 “Therapy and Rehabilitation” at the first (bachelor’s) level of higher education (approved and enacted by the Order of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine dated December 19, 2018, No. 1419). This program was successfully accredited in 2023 by the National Agency for Higher Education Quality Assurance. At the second (master’s) level, training is provided in specialization 227.1 “Physical Therapy” (approved and enacted by the Order of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine dated May 24, 2023, No. 182-l).
The Department has formed a team of experienced academic and teaching staff. Professionally oriented subjects are taught not only in the Department’s classrooms and practical facilities, but also at clinical training sites. The Department has signed cooperation agreements with numerous medical institutions, hospitals, polyclinics, and rehabilitation centers of various forms of ownership. These facilities provide students with opportunities for internships and potential future employment.

Acting Head of Department: Associate Professor, Candidate of Sciences (PhD) in Physical Education and Sport, Oleksandr Ivanovych Halashko
The course in Physical Education at the then Lviv Veterinary Institute was introduced on September 1, 1940, alongside the program of military training for students. The Department itself was established as an independent structural unit in 1949. At that time, the teaching staff consisted of four lecturers: Adolf Samoilovych Sehner, Oleksandr Ivanovych Boiko, Borys Stepanovych Zaporozhskyi, and, beginning in 1951, Vasyl Vasylovych Solomonko. During the 1950–1951 academic year, the department also employed Master of Sport Volodymyr Stanislavovych Keller, a globally renowned scholar in the theory and methodology of sport, Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, Professor, Honored Coach, and Honored Worker of Science of Ukraine.
In 2017, the department was headed by Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences (PhD), Associate Professor, Master of Sport of Ukraine, and National Category Judge Bohdan S. Semeniv. He is the author and co-author of 37 scientific articles and 8 educational-methodological works in the field of physical culture and sport, including 9 publications indexed in international scientometric databases Scopus and Web of Science. His textbook Specialized Physical Training of Students received the official approval of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine. His primary research focuses on the field of physical culture and sport among student youth.
Over different periods, the University has hosted All-Union and All-Ukrainian competitions among agrarian higher education institutions in handball, football, basketball, freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling. Other major events included the Ukrainian Championships in freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling, belt wrestling “Alysh,” weightlifting, and traditional Ukrainian belt wrestling, as well as national futsal student tournaments among colleges and technical schools.
In 2021, the First World Championship in Ukrainian belt wrestling was held at the Stepan Gzhytskyi Lviv National University of Veterinary Medicine and Biotechnologies.
The University has trained:
- 1 Honored Master of Sport of Ukraine,
- 5 Masters of Sport of Ukraine of International Class,
- 58 Masters of Sport of the USSR and Ukraine.
Currently, among enrolled students there are:
- 5 Masters of Sport of Ukraine of International Class,
- 16 Masters of Sport of Ukraine,
- 27 Candidate Masters of Sport of Ukraine,
- 9 members of Ukraine’s national teams.
The Department of Physical Education, Sport, and Health provides instruction in the following disciplines: Fundamentals of Theory and Methods of Physical Education; Introduction to the Specialty and History of Sport; Gymnastics with Teaching Methods; Active Games with Teaching Methods; Theory and Methodology of a Chosen Sport; Theory and Methodology of Children’s and Youth Sports; Athletics with Teaching Methods; Sports Games with Teaching Methods (handball, football, volleyball, table tennis); Weight Training and Strength Sports; Advanced Sports Mastery; Sports Facilities; Theory and Methodology of Adaptive Physical Education; Human Anatomy with Basics of Dynamic Morphology; Human Physiology and Physiological Foundations of Physical Education; Theory and Methods of Teaching Winter Sports; Olympic and Professional Sport; Physical Education (basic, preparatory, and special medical groups).
